‘René van der Gijp feels threatened by Andy van der Meijde’

René van der Gijp may have lashed out so hard at Andy van der Meijde, because he feels threatened by the new generation. That is what Wilfred Genee, colleague of both, says on Radio Veronica.

Wilfred Genee can also be seen twice a week since this TV season with Veronica Offside, the successor of the former Veronica Inside. In it, Andy van der Meijde and Wesley Sneijder are in the places where Johan Derksen and René van der Gijp used to be. René is not at all pleased with his successor, however.

“Andy’s c*t!”

René thinks Andy is doing very badly, he said on television a few weeks ago. “It’s very shitty,” he said bluntly. “It can’t be very good very often, but then he has to sit in it differently, I think. Then you have to try to pull the cart a little bit now and then when you notice that it comes to a standstill.”

It is not very common for a TV personality to be attacked so hard by his predecessor. It therefore gave Wilfred the best of his ability. “Yeah, but he hasn’t been doing it that long and I think he’s made some really good broadcasts. It can’t be a party every time.”

New Generation

How does Wilfred look back a few weeks later on René’s relentless attack? He says on Radio Veronica: “Yes, I noticed it a bit too, to be honest.”

What does Wilfred think is going on? “Obviously, the new generation is coming and then of course it may also be seen as a threat by the old generation. I don’t know, but… Well, they haven’t run into each other in the toilet yet.”

Resistance and Criticism

René judges too quickly, Wilfred thinks. “René is obviously a household name with everything he’s done over the years and Andy is just coming to watch. He only does it for a very short time. He is now trying to develop his own role and identity.”

“Some resistance and criticism here and there is also good, but I think he is doing very well so far.”
