FC Bayern is holding a memorial service for Franz Beckenbauer in the arena. BR television and ARD will broadcast the event on January 19th. Meanwhile, there are also increasing voices calling for the arena to be renamed.
BR television broadcasts the memorial service for Franz Beckenbauer. Because of the memorial service for the late football legend on January 19th, the women’s biathlon World Cup race will also be brought forward.
This also makes it possible for ARD to report on both the winter sports event in Antholz and the memorial service in Munich’s Allianz Arena. The biathlon race now starts at around 1:30 p.m., the memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Broadcast on BR television, Erste and the ARD media library
“The organizing committee in Antholz and the IBU have brought forward the biathlon race that was originally planned for this time. This means that we are now able to report comprehensively on the memorial ceremony for Franz Beckenbauer as well as to show biathlon. We would like to thank those responsible for this Biathlon very much,” said ARD sports coordinator Axel Balkausky. The event will be broadcast on BR television, Erste and the ARD media library. Moderator Esther Sedlaczek presents the broadcast.
Future renaming of the arena? Karl-Heinz Rummenigge skeptical
Meanwhile, there are increasing calls for the arena to be renamed, as suggested by Ottmar Hitzfeld. However, FC Bayern’s supervisory board Karl-Heinz Rummenigge reacted cautiously. “There is an agreement with our long-standing, loyal and very serious partner Allianz, and it must be respected,” he told the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”.
“Franz Beckenbauer died a few days ago,” Rummenigge continued: “Now is the time of mourning, and FC Bayern will host a worthy memorial service in Franz’s honor next Friday. We should take time for everything else.” Rummenigge emphasized: “Without Franz Beckenbauer, the Allianz Arena would not exist.”
Beckenbauer died on Sunday at the age of 78. FC Bayern invites you to “say farewell to the unforgettable ‘Kaiser’ in a special, emotional setting,” as the club announced on Tuesday. The Munich Arena is currently lit up in the evenings with the special “Thank you Franz” lighting..
