Independent discussion leader Johan Remkes today sent a letter of invitation to a wide number of parties to discuss the details of the tasks for nature, nitrogen, climate, water and the future of Dutch agriculture with the cabinet in August. Remkes emphasizes in the letter of invitation to agricultural and nature organizations and parties in the chain such as banks and feed manufacturers to jointly explore where opportunities lie: there is room for all ideas to realize the tasks that lie ahead.

In the letter of invitation, Remkes addresses the concerns that exist – particularly in the agricultural sector. Remkes, appointed by the cabinet as discussion leader at the request of the House of Representatives, calls it the strength of the Netherlands to conduct open discussions, in which connections are sought and there is room to speak without taboos.

Remkes: “I have great appreciation for the Dutch agricultural sector. I see that in recent years a lot has come to the barnyard. Government and politics have not always been the parties farmers could rely on, mainly because they have been squeaking around for too long. I see the conversations as a turning point: coming out of the impasse together. The cabinet has assured me that there is room and joint solutions are possible.”

Ideas and suggestions

The cabinet sent two letters to the House of Representatives in June: the initiation memorandum of the National Program for Rural Areas and an initial perspective for agricultural entrepreneurs, which will be followed up in September. The scope and impact of the tasks have been outlined, the government wants to continue working with all parties involved on the implementation of this task. Change is necessary, but not by telling entrepreneurs what to do, but by listening and giving ideas a place.

The talks will take place from August under the leadership of Remkes, in confidentiality and in the presence of the Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality and/or the Minister for Nature and Nitrogen. Further consultations will take place about location(s) and dates in consultation with the invited parties.
