From Friday 8 July, adults who have been vaccinated but have not yet received a booster or repeat shot will receive a reminder letter from RIVM and/or a text message from GGD GHOR Nederland. In this way, people are reminded to still get the corona vaccinations, for which they were previously invited. This is especially important now that the number of infections with the coronavirus is increasing. In many cases, vaccination prevents serious illness and hospitalization. It thus reduces the pressure on care and helps to protect vulnerable people in society.
Vaccine effectiveness against severe disease is still relatively high in all age groups after full vaccination. This means that full vaccination still protects well against serious illness and hospitalization. However, the increase in the number of corona infections underlines the need to get all the recommended vaccinations: the basic series with a booster vaccination for everyone under the age of 60 and the repeat vaccination for everyone from 60 years of age. The booster vaccination restores basic protection. The booster vaccination, specifically for people over 60, adults with Down syndrome, residents of nursing homes and adults with a severe immune disorder, is necessary because the immune system works less well in these people, so that protection decreases more quickly.

There is currently no reason for a new round of vaccinations. In July, the expert team for COVID-19 vaccinations from RIVM will advise whether a new round of vaccinations later in the year is necessary. The RIVM and the GGDs have already started preparations to be able to carry out this new round quickly if it is decided to do so.
