Rembrandt’s ‘Vandelbearer’ goes on a tour through the Netherlands

The Fries Museum in Leeuwarden is the first museum to open in May The Standard Bearer by Rembrandt will exhibit. The Rijksmuseum has that on Wednesday evening with a press release announced.

The painting, which was purchased at the end of January 2022 with 150 million euros in support from the Dutch state, will make a twelve-month tour of twelve museums in twelve provinces.

The stops after the Fries Museum are: Centraal Museum in Utrecht (June), Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar (July), Drents Museum in Assen (August), Kunstlinie in Almere (September), Het Noordbrabants Museum in Den Bosch (October), Mauritshuis in The Hague (November), Rijksmuseum Twenthe in Enschede (December), Museum Arnhem in Arnhem (January 2023), Zeeuws Museum in Middelburg (February), Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht (March), and the Groninger Museum in Groningen (April).

Free entrance

The painting can be seen in the museums for three weeks at a time. Each museum will offer free entry for at least one day. After the tour gets The Standard Bearer a permanent place in the Hall of Fame of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.

The Rijksmuseum is producing a special teaching package for primary and secondary education and senior secondary vocational education. In collaboration with the Rembrandt Association, which also contributed 15 million to the purchase price of 175 million euros, an accompanying book is being published about the acquisition and importance of the painting for the collection of the Netherlands.
