The whole month of August it can be seen in the Drents Museum in Assen: the almost four hundred year old painting The Standard Bearer. Painted by the Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn.
The artwork is touring twelve museums in the Netherlands and is now visiting Assen. They are proud of it at the Drents Museum. “So or what,” says director Harry Tupan. “If our museum can literally be the standard-bearer of such a famous painting – which can be seen for the first time in Drenthe – then that is a very beautiful moment. For us this is a highlight.”
According to Tupan, the painting Rembrandt painted in 1636 is special. “Rembrandt has used himself as a model, but it’s not so much a self-portrait,” he explains. “But he portrays himself very strongly and self-consciously.” Tough and proud, Rembrandt looks at the viewer. The standard-bearer was also an honorable position in the army.
