Remarkable brown and white signs refer to Colonies of Benevolence at three places in Drenthe

Only areas with ‘national value’ get it: a brown and white area board. In Drenthe this week, signs referring to the Colonies of Benevolence were placed at three places along the major roads

The background is mainly touristic; the motorist must be tempted to take the next exit. Or to come back for that. The signs with the text ‘Colonies of Benevolence’ are on both sides of the A28, the A32 and on the N33.

The Colonies of Benevolence, an official UNESCO World Heritage Site since last year, can therefore also be glimpsed from the highway. The signs are located near Veenhuizen and Frederiksoord/Wilhelminaoord, were commissioned by the province of Drenthe and designed and installed by the ANWB.

There are still a number of these signs in Drenthe, for the Drents-Friese Wold and for Geopark De Hondsrug.
