Released suspected thief of West Frisian ‘camper gang’ arrested again

A possible criminal from the West Frisian Abbekerk seems to have gone wrong again. The 30-year-old is a suspect in the ‘camper gang’ case and was allowed to await that investigation in freedom. Until last month, the police say, he was caught red-handed at a warehouse with a stolen camper from a German tourist.

The Public Prosecution Service (OM) confirms this after questions from NH. The man will now remain in custody for at least three months, just like a 26-year-old man from Grootebroek.

The latter man is a new suspect, possibly also part of a grouping from West Friesland who, in varying compositions, robs unsuspecting tourists from the Netherlands and abroad from their camper.

These are victims in coastal towns such as Julianadorp, Bergen aan Zee, Zandvoort, Volendam and Egmond aan Zee. There are already for that three perpetrators convicted.

This 30-year-old Abbekker has not yet appeared and was allowed to await the investigation in freedom. The Public Prosecution Service now states that he has gone wrong again. On 8 and 14 July, campers were stolen from tourists in Zandvoort, among others.

Stolen camper in shed

A German camper reports it and the police start an investigation. They end up at a warehouse in Middenmeer, where they find the known suspect and two other possible accomplices.

The stolen camper is therefore in the shed. All three are then arrested. Whether they may have committed other thefts is still being investigated. The two West Frisians must answer to the judge in a few months.

The third ‘caught’ suspect, a 29-year-old man of unknown place of residence or whereabouts, was released shortly after his arrest. “The chance that he would go wrong again is estimated to be low to moderate,” said a spokesman.
