A memorial service will be held in the Margarethakerk in Norg on Saturday 8 October in memory of the crew of an English bomber that crashed near Westervelde in the night of 8 to 9 October 1943.
Relatives of three—Eric Brinton, Sidney Burnam-Richards and Bruce MacPherson—of the killed crewmembers unveil a niche containing memorabilia they provided at this service. This unveiling is a postponed activity of the ’40-’45 working group of the Historical Association Nonch, in the context of 75 years of Liberation.
The meeting in the Margarethakerk also discusses the dramatic flight of the Lancaster JB181 of the 7 Squadron, which took the lives of seven young men. Four bodies were recovered and buried in Norg. The names of the three missing are listed on the plaque at the church.
Thousand Pounds Found
Ten years ago, the Lancaster was in the news when three large bombs (thousand-pounders) were found on the instructions of the working group established in 1994. These were detonated near Assen by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service (EOD).
The memorial meeting, which is open to everyone, starts at 2 p.m.
