Extension in the cup decisive
After the knockout round in the Spanish Cup, FC Barcelona also has to complain about another injury to Ansu Fati. According to the club, the 19-year-old suffered an injury to his left thigh in the 2: 3 (1: 1, 2: 2) defeat after extra time at Athletic Bilbao, which had previously forced him to sit out since November. On Saturday, coach Xavi (quoted via “Mundo Deportivo”) on the current status and emphasized that it was a “relapse”.
Fati came on as a substitute after 61 minutes of Thursday’s cup game, but had to leave shortly after extra time began. “Dr. Ricard Pruna told me he was ready to play half an hour or thirty-five minutes, but extra time thwarted us. We asked Ansu about the 90 minutes and he was fine, in the end you can never control it,” explained Xavi.
Fati succeeds Messi: These players wore the number 10 at Barça
How long the Spaniard will be missing is not yet clear. Spanish media estimate the downtime to be at least two to three months. “We’re going to try and do some very specific planning so that injury doesn’t flare up again and he comes back at 100 per cent. There will be one last meeting on Monday and there we will see what needs to be done,” said Xavi.
For Fati, the failure is another setback in his young career, after he had to pass from November 2020 to September last year with a torn meniscus. Since the start of the 2020/21 season, the offensive player has only played in 20 competitive games. With a market value of €60m, he is still the third most valuable player in the Blaugrana squad.
