Reiner Calmund on Leverkusen out of the DFB Cup: “Had to puke”

Bayer Leverkusen lost to Elversberg in the first round of the cup. Reiner Calmund finds clear words – and doesn’t mince his words.

The long-time manager Reiner Calmund vented his frustration with clear words after Bayer Leverkusen’s surprising cup exit in the first round at SV Elversberg. “I was sitting at the most beautiful weather in a beautiful stadium. Wonderful food, nice people, everything the finest, only afterwards I had to throw up,” said Calmund in the podcast “Real Champions XXL”.

“But not because of the food, but because of the team, what they played,” said Calmund. In similar wording, he tweeted the statement again on Thursday morning. The Saarlander by choice, Calmund, who worked at Bayer from 1976 to 2004, had followed the 3: 4 of the Bundesliga club at the third division promoted team in the stadium. “That’s inexcusable, unacceptable,” Calmund said.

He saw “an arrogant demeanor from A to Z”: “Above all, the defense was a total disaster. The four goals were well deserved. If they were unlucky, they would have gotten two more. There must be Doctor Dralle, that’s right sharp hair lotions on the head so that they become clear in the bulb.”
