Regensburg negative series ends at Holstein Kiel

Status: 03/13/2023 00:00

With a 2:1 (1:1) victory at Holstein Kiel, Jahn Regensburg won again after ten games without a win and left last place in the 2nd Bundesliga.

Regensburg took the lead on Sunday (March 12th, 2023) through Kaan Caliskaner (45th minute) shortly before the half-time whistle. However, the hosts immediately struck back and scored the 1-1 equalizer (45+3) through Steven Skrzybski in added time. But shortly before the end, Prince Owusu (87th) scored the winning goal for Jahn.

With 33 points, Kiel remains in ninth place in the middle of the table. With their first win since October 22, 2022, Regensburg has 23 points and jumps to 16th place. This means that SSV is not in a direct relegation zone for the first time since the 18th matchday.

Jahn goalkeeper Urbig saves twice

Regensburg set the first exclamation point (6th) with a header from Andreas Albers that went just wide (6th), but after that there was almost nothing to be seen from the guests until the end of the first half.

Holstein had two big chances through Fabian Reese alone (15′, 16′), which Jahn’s 19-year-old goalkeeper Jonas Urbig parried with great reflexes. As we headed towards the break, both teams suddenly managed to score. Regensburg scored the 1-0 with its second good offensive action ever through Caliskaner.

Skrzybski brings Kiel back into play

But the “Storks” hit back before the half-time whistle. Skrzybski was spot on when a cross slipped through from the outside and steered the ball over the line from almost five meters to make it 1-1.

In the second half, Regensburg then dared to go far more forward than in the first 45 minutes. Leon Guware just missed the lead again with a shot from almost 20 meters (51st).

Several good opportunities for Holstein

The hosts came back stronger from the middle of the period. Kiel had two more good chances thanks to the very active Reese, but the attacker narrowly missed the goal with his shots (63′, 70′). Even after a corner kick, the ball didn’t want to find its way into the goal in the final phase, but smacked the post of Regensburg’s goal (80th).

As in half one, it looked more like a Kiel success. But Regensburg struck again this time: Owusu was spot on with a cross from the left in the penalty area, took the ball briefly and scored the winning goal from ten meters out.

On Matchday 25, Holstein Kiel is a guest at Hamburger SV (Saturday, March 18, 2023 at 1 p.m.). Regensburg receives SC Paderborn at the same time.
