Refugees queue up for a hot meal in Exloo: ‘No overcooked vegetables’

The asylum seekers come from different parts of the world, such as Syria and Egypt. And they take that into account when cooking. “So not the Dutch way, with overcooked vegetables. And certainly no pork,” says volunteer Mike Henderson from Exloo, while he shells traditional Dutch Brussels sprouts for the hot meal. “I am happy to sacrifice my free time for this action.”

According to chairman Luchjenbroers of the village hall, the refugees responded enthusiastically to the shared hot meal. “They immediately embraced it with a smile. And if this promotion is satisfactory from all sides, we will see if we can offer it again in January or February.”
