Cash register crash at the RBB! The broadcaster must save 41 million euros by 2024. But the new director takes it easy on the employees – and prefers to cut the program.

Relief for the 2000 permanent employees and 500 freelancers with employment guarantee. “We are not planning any operational layoffs,” announced RBB boss Katrin Vernau (49) to the staff on Friday. She has already priced in the next tariff increase. Despite far higher salaries than in the public service.

Amazing, because the cash check revealed a 41 million hole. Just because many new contributors moved to the region didn’t make it 70 million. That’s how much money they had RBB bosses put back spent it instead.

Vernau: “If we don’t turn things around, we’ll have a minus of 174 million in 2028.”

She now wants to shorten the program. “Why a third 24 hours a day, seven days a week?” she asks, “why so many duplicates?” In January, Vernau wants to reveal which programs she is cutting.
