Refugees on an asylum boat in Deventer are eager for bath slippers, in large sizes | Deventer

Refugees who have been staying on the refugee boat in Deventer since mid-October, urgently need slippers. To be precise, bath slippers in sizes 41 to 43. A remarkable and specific request from the municipality of Deventer.

“It is quite warm on the boat and many people are used to not wearing closed shoes indoors, but slippers. It mainly concerns men from the age of 12,” says municipal spokesman Maarten Jan Stuurman.

According to the Deventer spokesperson, the call is well received. “A lot of slippers have already been brought to the boat. We also picked up flip flops that were left at swimming pools and have not been picked up again.”

Clothing

In addition to slippers, clothing is also required for all 174 people on the boat. “People have fled only with the clothes they were wearing.” The refugees do not come from a specific country. “Basically from various countries where there is war. It is not a fixed group, but many are from Syria.”

The Security Regions have the task of receiving asylum seekers per region. ‘The municipalities within our IJsselland Safety Region have discussed the options with each other. Reception on a cruise ship was the fastest to realize. In many municipalities it is not possible for a ship of such length to moor. That is possible with us in Deventer. We also feel called to make a contribution from a human point of view’, according to the municipality on its own site.

The temporary crisis emergency shelter has been realized on the river vessel Princess de Province, which is moored at the Pothoofdkade. Refugees can stay here until mid-March 2023.

Earlier we were allowed to take a look inside the boat.
