Refueling: This is how consumers save money on fuel costs

The whole world is talking about e-mobility, but the fact is that very few electric car own. Anyone who cannot or does not want to use a bicycle or public transport will find themselves at the petrol pump at regular intervals. This walk is becoming a nuisance more and more often: prices are rising and rising and drivers feel powerless. With a few small tricks, however, you can also save money when refueling.

Comparing gas stations is worthwhile

A price comparison at the gas stations in the immediate vicinity usually shows quickly where the fuel is cheapest. A quick look on the internet will help. Special apps on the smartphone also show directly where a few cents can be saved per liter.

Avoid highway gas stations

The Bundeskartellamt’s 2018 annual report revealed other important points. According to this, motorway filling stations were on average around 15 cents per liter more expensive than other filling stations. It is better to leave the autobahn, here it can be enough to drive off to a truck stop. According to the report, this is a few cents more expensive than street gas stations, but on average it is usually more than 10 cents per liter cheaper than filling the tank directly at the motorway.

Wallet benefits from right timing

Not only where you fill up can be important, especially when is reflected in the price. It is usually more expensive in the morning than in the evening. The Federal Cartel Office already recommended in April that it is best to refuel in the evening. “Prices are usually lowest later in the evening. A little planning for the way to work or vacation trips is worthwhile,” said Andreas Mundt, President of the Federal Cartel Office in an official statement.

Not at the pump on weekends or public holidays

Not only the time, but also the day can have an impact on the fuel price. So in most cases it is more expensive on weekends or public holidays. Gasoline costs can also increase significantly shortly before the start or end of the holiday.

If you heed these tips and are lucky, you should save a little when you go to the pump. However, one should not forget that the price of gas depends primarily on oil prices.
