Soccer referee Riem Hussein will again receive a special honor. The 41-year-old from Bad Harzburg is one of the twelve referees nominated for the Women’s European Championship in England (July 6th to 31st) and is therefore allowed to referee games at the third major tournament in a row.
Line judge Katrin Rafalski and video assistants Christian Dingert and Harm Osmers have also been nominated from Germany.
For the first time ever, the VAR is being used at a women’s European Championship. In the course of the cooperation between the European Football Union (UEFA) and the South American confederation CONMEBOL, Emikar Calderas Barrera from Venezuela will also be a referee from South America at the European Championship. In return, UEFA is also sending a team of referees to the Copa America Femenina in Colombia (8-30 July).
Hussein moved up to German professional football in 2015 and since then has regularly refereed games in the 3rd division for men. The FIFA referee is also active in both the women’s Bundesliga and the women’s Champions League.
The pharmacist officiated two matches at the 2017 European Championships in the Netherlands, and two years later it was even one more game at the World Cup in France.
