Referee Felix Brych defends video referee

Berlin (AP) – Germany’s top referee Felix Brych has vehemently defended the use of the video referee in the Bundesliga.

“We’ve had it long enough now and everyone should accept the system by now. With the VAR we correct around 100 decisions every year,” said the 46-year-old in the Sport1 “double pass 2nd Bundesliga”.

“If we didn’t do this, we would be discussing over 100 more decisions every year. Especially these offside situations, which are becoming increasingly scarce,” said Brych, who ended his international career in December 2021. “When it comes to the big games, in which promotion and relegation are decided, there is no alternative,” said the multiple “Referee of the Year”.

At the end of the coming season, the Munich player also wants to end his Bundesliga career, but he is apparently not yet sure. “It looks like that at the moment, we’ll see how it goes. I’m fit and I’m enjoying it. I want to whistle as long as I can,” said Brych. “Let’s see how that develops in the next few years. I don’t think so far, though.”

After the European Football Championship in the summer of 2021, the doctor of law announced his international farewell. The former FIFA referee was also on duty at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and 2018 in Russia. In 2017, Brych officiated the Champions League final between Juventus Turin and Real Madrid. He has been whistling in the Bundesliga since 2004 and, according to the DFB, has played 316 games in the first division and 130 in the second division.
