A referee was beaten up during a basketball match between Willebroek and Sint-Amands last weekend. The referee had to take several blows and kicks to the head and was taken to hospital.
The incident happened on Saturday evening in the De Schalk sports hall in Willebroek after just 9 minutes of basketball. After a foul was blown, a dispute arose between the referee and a Willebroek player. After he was excluded for the rest of the match, a brother of the player involved intervened. Just like his father. Out of nowhere the referee was attacked and had to take blows. Even while he was on the ground.

Some opposing players and a fellow referee came to offer help. A little later the police also arrived. The referee was taken to hospital for treatment. He suffered, among other things, a broken nose. After receiving treatment in the hospital, he was now allowed to leave the hospital. The Rivierenland police zone started an investigation into the facts. “The identities were noted and those involved will be interrogated at a later stage,” said police spokesman Dirk Van de Sande.
