On Friday, October 6, councilor Bert Jan ten Oever will officially give the go-ahead for the redesign of six shopping streets in Assen. The first work will start today, Monday October 2.
The line of Koopmansplein and Brink will be continued in Kruisstraat, Marktstraat, Weiersloop, Oude Molenstraat, Oudestraat and the eastern part of the Gedempte Singel. This will create more space for greenery and water, places to store bicycles, new lighting, good accessibility, space for activities and space to meet each other, the municipality of Assen promises.
Attractive city center
According to the municipality, the starting point of the design is an attractive and inclusive city center. There will be several green meeting places and the streets will have a green design.
In preparation for the work, the archaeological investigation started at the beginning of September. Work on the cables and pipes in the six streets will start today. The expectation is that the redesign of the Weiersloop will start in January 2024, followed by Marktstraat and Kruisstraat in the spring of 2024. The other streets will follow afterwards.
Starting signal
On Friday, October 6 at 2 p.m., councilor Bert Jan ten Oever, together with employees of Dusseldorp and Baas BV, will break ground to signal the start of work in the shopping streets. The moment takes place at the Weiersloop – Markstraat intersection.
