Reddit has been given $4.5 million (about €4.12 million) in ransom demands. Reddit is one of the largest discussion board services on the internet.

In February, a total of 80 gigabytes of data from the company ended up in the hands of hackers. A hacker group called BlackCat has claimed to be the perpetrator of the attack, and is now demanding a ransom from the company for not publishing these. BlackCat is also known as ALPHV.

– In April, we sent two emails to Reddit in which we said that we had obtained confidential information. This did not interest them at the time, BlackCat said in its published message.

The attacker said in his published message that they have information that shows, among other things, how Reddit monitors and silences its users and other “interesting statistics”. They don’t think Reddit is going to pay the ransom.

– We want 4.5 million dollars to remove the message and keep quiet about it, BlackCat stated.

The attacker has also stated that he is unhappy with Reddit’s latest reform, where they aim to fund third-party app developers to use the service.

Reddit’s reform was opposed by several discussion community administrators. At its peak, there were about 8,400 communities in the strike. During the week, approximately 5,000 communities have abandoned the strike.
