Red lantern Zulte Waregem takes full loot in derby at Kortrijk
Despite the second win of the season, Essevee remains behind in the Jupiler Pro League. Kortrijk misses an opportunity to connect with the broad middle bracket. Mbaye Leye, the troubled coach of Zulte Waregem, shook his team vigorously before the derby. Compared to the 2-5 loss against OHL last weekend, he made six changes. For example, captain Sammy Bossut had to make way for Louis Bostyn in goal. He immediately showed himself at the start of the match by pushing a header from Avenatti against the post.
Halfway through the first period, after a few chances on both sides, Bostyn had to give in. Lukas Willen headed a cross from D’Haene into his own goal. On the other side, Fadera had the equalizer on the foot, but Watanabe saved the shot on the line.
After the break, Essevee went looking for the 1-1. Vigen first hit the bar, but on the hour the visitors saw their attacking spirit rewarded. Vossen extended a corner with the heel and Tambedou hit the equalizer in the restart.
Zulte Waregem now continued on his momentum and barely five minutes later, KVK goalkeeper Ilic was allowed to turn around a second time. Again after a corner, Nigerian Offor headed the 1-2 against the nets.
In the final phase, Zulte Waregem deepened the lead. Substitute Zinho Gano, back in the selection after his banishment to the B-team, recorded the final score from the spot.
Zulte Waregem now has 8 points in the standings, one less than Cercle Brugge and Eupen, who will play against each other later in the day. Kortrijk is just above that by 10 points.
