The Red Hot Chilli Peppers covered Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” (1991) during their show at the Silverlake Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles on Saturday (October 29).
The lineup of the band was atypical: John Frusciante took over the vocals in the chorus, frontman Anthony Kiedis only in the verses.
Live Cover Version of “Smells Like Teen Spirit”
Frusciante has previously covered the Nirvana classic solo but never with a band.
During their Los Angeles concert, Frusciante also performed his version of the Ramones’ track “I Remember You” (1977).
The grunge hit “Smells Like Teen Spirit”
With the song, which appeared on the album NEVERMIND, Nirvana unintentionally brought the genre grunge into the charts in 1991. The piece also helped the band achieve their musical breakthrough.
This year, the Red Hot Chili Peppers released two albums with their ex-guitarist John Frusciante, UNLIMITED LOVE and RETURN OF THE DREAM CANTEEN. In early 2023 the band will tour America, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore and Mexico.
