Red Cross sets up tents in Ter Apel for crisis emergency shelter

Tonight the Red Cross has placed tents at the overcrowded application center in Ter Apel, so that asylum seekers can be received. The aid organization is taking into account that on Wednesday evening there will be no more room for about two hundred people, says director Marieke van Schaik.

The Red Cross is also ready to take people to emergency reception locations elsewhere in the country. The aid organization says that with regard to the emergency shelter, it is working together with the Council for Refugees and UNICEF.

State Secretary Eric van der Burg of Asylum and Migration has asked the Groningen Security Region because of the crowds in Ter Apel to deploy the crisis emergency shelter. It is so busy that it is no longer possible to transfer people to alternative locations in time. With crisis shelter, people are accommodated in sports halls, for example.

In the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, asylum seekers had been forced to sleep outside in Ter Apel for some time because there was no room left. They ended up staying overnight in waiting rooms in the center.
