The director Isabel Coixet, nominated in the category of ‘Best Documentary Film’ for ‘El sostre groc (The Yellow Roof)’, has arrived on the blue carpet with a protest message by opting for black pants and a jacket of the same color, with the words ‘Women, life, freedom’ (Woman, life, freedom) written on the back. On the jacket could also be seen a drawing in homage to Mahsa Amini, the young Iranian who died for not wearing her veil.
Asked about her attire, the director stated that “there are people who enjoy tuning – alluding to the party – but I never did”. “There is a moment when you say ‘how much pressure’ and I told the illustrator Elena Scilinguo: draw me Masha Amini’s face”, she recalled.
Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian woman, became a feminist symbol of the country after dying in police custody after being arrested for violating the Islamic dress code. Her death sparked a wave of protests both in Iran and internationally.
