Recount in Heemstede completed: no change in seat distribution

The outcome of the vote recount that was held today in Heemstede is known. The recount does not lead to a change in the seat distribution† The result of the municipal elections will therefore remain unchanged and Samen Sterk Heemstede (SSH) will not be included in the new municipal council. It was the first recount of the municipal elections in Heemstede ever.

“All doubt has been removed. It is clear, and that is how it should be”, Eric Geels, SSH party leader, informs media partner Haarlem 105. “It is good, this book is closed. I will now discuss politics in Heemstede from follow the side.”

As a result of last week’s results, Geels requested a recount of the votes. He did this because he doubted about the reliability of the result and because he narrowly missed a remaining seat with a difference of 13 votes. In the town hall, all voting passes and ballot papers from the municipal elections were recounted in public.

According to mayor Astrid Nienhuis it was very important that this happened. “Now that the question has been asked whether the results of the elections are correct, it is very wise to remove all doubts and proceed with a recount.”

No changes

In the end, the recount resulted in almost no change in the number of votes, especially between candidates within the same party. The total percentage of changes at party level is 0.16 percent. The recount has therefore not led to a change in the distribution of seats between the parties or the candidates.

The new council will be installed on Thursday 31 March.
