No new contract
Manchester United and David de Gea (32) go their separate ways. After the Spaniard’s contract with the Premier League club expired at the end of June, there will be no new working paper with the “Red Devils”. This was announced on Saturday by the club and the keeper, who had been trained at Atlético Madrid and was in the United goal 545 times.
“I never thought when I left Madrid as a young man that we would achieve what we achieved together,” de Gea wrote via social media of his 12-year spell in Manchester, where he went in 2011 for a fee of 25 million euros from Atlético – at the time the fourth-highest transfer fee ever paid for a goalkeeper. Since then, ten other goalkeepers have gone to a new employer for this sum or more.

De Gea tops Man United history in terms of goalkeeper appearances for the club. Referring only to the Premier League since it was founded in 1992, de Gea is one of only three professionals in the record champions who have played more than 400 games. Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs are just two club icons and no other goalkeeper ahead of him. In February of this year, de Gea also broke Peter Schmeichel’s club record for the most clean sheets.
But it is now time to take on a new challenge, to push yourself for another task, said de Gea. The 45-time national player did not write what that could be. He is also rumored to be moving to the Saudi Pro League, where eight professionals from top European clubs with a market value of at least EUR 15 million or a corresponding transfer fee have already switched to this summer.
I just wanted to send this farewell message to all Manchester United supporters.
I would like to express my unwavering gratitude and appreciation for the love from the last 12 years. We’ve achieved a lot since my dear Sir Alex Ferguson brought me to this club. I took incredible… pic.twitter.com/6R7ezOEf1E
