The 2021/2022 cultivation year is a record year for potato processor Royal Avebe. That was already expected, but it has also become reality. A tonne of delivered potatoes has a price increase of 34 euros compared to a year earlier.
“An unprecedentedly strong year,” Royal Avebe chairman David Fousert opens the press conference at the head office in Veendam. The price for a ton of potatoes has gone through the roof. “We have to keep potato cultivation attractive,” explains Fousert.
Where previously more than 98 euros had to be paid for a thousand kilos of potatoes, this is now 133.34 euros. The chairman of the board of the cooperative, which is declining in members due to an aging population, says he is proud of the past year. “The growers were very positive, but the growers are also quickly busy with this year. That shows a different picture and has many challenges. But it is too early to say anything about that now.”
