Record extended: tennis star breaks the next sound barrier

Match lost, sound barrier broken: The US tennis professional John Isner set the next record at the ATP tournament in Auckland, Australia.

Even before his match against French qualifier Gregoire Barrere, John Isner led the ranking of players with the most aces on the ATP tour. In his 7:6, 6:7, 3:6 defeat, he further increased his lead over the competition and also broke another sound barrier.

With a whopping 14,018 aces beaten, he is the first player in the history of professional tennis to break the 14,000 mark. 28 aces in the match against Barrere helped the American.

It is almost impossible that Isner will be caught up in the all-time list of the best in the foreseeable future. Croatian Ivo Karlovic is currently in second place. Although he has also hit 13,728 aces in the course of his career, Karlovic more or less announced his retirement at the end of 2021.

Although he has not yet officially ended his career, it has been more than a year since his last tournament appearance. Karlovic’s return to the tour is therefore no longer expected.

In third place in the ranking is perhaps the best player of all time: Roger Federer. The Swiss player, who has since retired, hit a total of 11,478 aces in his career – but in almost twice as many matches as Isner (1462:749).
