After three years, motorsport fans had reason to be happy: the German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring took place again – and delighted the spectators. They also set a record.
When they made their comeback after three years, the fans set a historic record at the German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring. A total of 232,202 visitors, more than ever before, came to Hohenstein-Ernstthal spread over three days; the previous record was from 2011 (230,133).
“Interest in the motorcycle Grand Prix has never been higher than this year, as demonstrated by more than 230,000 visitors over the weekend at Germany’s largest individual sport event,” said ADAC board member Lars Soutschka: “We have a great motorsport festival over three days experienced with enthusiastic fans. That shows: Motorsport in Germany is ‘in’.”
Schrötter is waiting for a top 3 result
In 2020, the Grand Prix was canceled due to the corona pandemic, last year it was driven behind closed doors without an audience. On Sunday, 95,214 fans watched Marcel Schrötter (Vilgertshofen) finish fourth in Moto2. He’s still waiting for his first top 3 result of the season.
Victory went to the superior Spaniard Augusto Fernandez ahead of his compatriot Pedro Acosta and Sam Lowes (Great Britain). 50,786 spectators came to practice on Friday and 86,202 to qualify on Saturday.
In the past ten editions of the cult event, the 200,000 mark has been broken seven times. Only in 2012 (195,695), 2017 (164,801) and 2018 (193,355) did this not succeed.
