The most snow fell in the prefectures of Shiga and Kyoto, according to the Japanese weather bureau. In Hikone, for example, 68 centimeters fell in 24 hours and a suit of 70 centimeters was measured in Asago. Since the start of the measurements, so much snow had never fallen in these places in 24 hours.
A 44-year-old man tells the Japan Times that he got stuck between other stranded cars in Hikone on his way to work. “I’ve been standing still for four hours,” he told the newspaper. “It’s been a long time since I’ve seen so much snow,” said a Toyosato resident of the 60-centimeter snow cover.
The heavy snow showers and slippery roads will continue until Tuesday. Then the temperature rises again.
