RECONSTRUCTION. 1972, with 3,101 road deaths, the blackest year ever on Belgian roads: “You could even drive up to 1.5 promille – without a seat belt”

Never was Belgian traffic as deadly as in 1972. Earlier this week, you could hear the unveiling of a memorial in Hasselt. In that one pitch-black year alone, 3,101 men, women and children died on our roads. How the hell was that possible? “Simple: everything was possible and everything was allowed. Even driving without a seatbelt with ten pints of beer in the blood.”
