The court in Den Bosch has suspended a permit for a temporary shelter for 250 asylum seekers in the former Mövenpick Hotel at the Pettelaarpark. The permit was issued by the mayor and aldermen on Monday. Immediately afterwards, that decision was challenged in court.
The lawsuit was filed on behalf of local residents. Until Monday, they had not been able to object to a formal decision by the municipality to accommodate asylum seekers in the former hotel. This possibility became available by granting a permit for this to the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA).
The judge suspended the permit until those objections can be dealt with in summary proceedings. That case will be heard on Monday. A spokesperson for the court does not rule out that a ruling may be taken ‘at the hearing’ or later that same day.
There is a need for haste, because all municipalities are obliged to accommodate asylum seekers. The municipality of Den Bosch and the COA hope that they will be able to accommodate 250 asylum seekers in the former hotel from February 27, next Tuesday. They would be allowed to stay there for a maximum of five years.
A similar situation occurs in Uden. This concerns a plan by the municipality of Maashorst to offer asylum seekers shelter in the Van der Valk Hotel. This will be challenged at the court in Den Bosch on Thursday.
Meierijstad
The municipality of Meierijstad, a neighboring municipality of Den Bosch, is making three reception locations available longer, because there is a shortage of reception places throughout the country. About 270 asylum seekers are allowed to continue living in Schijndel and Sint-Oedenrode for the time being.
Since March last year, approximately 120 asylum seekers have been housed in a former town hall on the Markt in Schijndel. About seventy asylum seekers can be accommodated in a former office building in Schijndel until the end of February next year. A former holiday park in Sint-Oedenrode will also remain open for a maximum of eighty underage asylum seekers for the time being.
