Recently retired cyclist Davide Rebellin (51) died after a collision

Italian cyclist Davide Rebellin died on Wednesday at the age of 51 a collision with a truck during a training ride, Italian media report. Until recently, Rebellin was still a cycling professional, but retired from cycling after the Veneto Classic last month.

The collision took place in the town of Montebello Vicentino, in northern Italy. According to Italian media, he died instantly. The truck driver would have driven on.

Rebellin was a professional cyclist for thirty years and in 2004 won the classics Liège-Bastogne-Liège and the Amstel Gold Race. He was also the strongest three times in the Walloon Arrow and in 1996 he took a stage victory in the Tour of Italy.

Between 2009 and 2011, the Italian was suspended for two years for doping use. After his suspension he never returned to his old level, but he remained active as a professional until he was 51 years old for a cyclist.
