The goal is clear: FC Bayern wants a sporting realignment with a new coach. Max Eberl, who will take up his position as sports director on March 1st, has to organize this.
Thomas Tuchel and FC Bayern Munich – that just didn’t fit. After a “good conversation”, board member Jan-Christian Dreesen and the current coach “amicably” agreed to part ways at the end of the season, as the German record champions said.
Officially it is said that the goals – winning the championship again and achieving as successful a result as possible in the Champions League – do not want to be shelved yet. For BR24Sport reporter and FC Bayern expert Florian Eckl, it is also clear that the club is fully concentrating on the realignment for the new season: “For me, FC Bayern is facing the biggest upheaval in 20 years,” he said in BR24Sport live on the Tuchel separation.
Squad planning and coaching search go hand in hand
The person who has to fix it isn’t there yet: Max Eberl. Next week, the 50-year-old with an FC Bayern past will be installed as the new sports director. It will be up to him to set the course for the future together with sports director Christoph Freund.
It is very important for Eckl that a coach is not brought in again who has completely different ideas when it comes to squad composition: “The squad planning and the selection of the coach must go hand in hand again,” said the FC Bayern expert . Eberl is exactly the right man for this.
New structures for a successful future
Unlike his predecessor Hasan Salihamidzic, who was “too small, too inexperienced for the FC Bayern construct,” Eberl brings a different know-how with him. A lot of work is already being done on the campus on the structures that FC Bayern is currently missing. Eberl could bring in his experience – including from the Red Bull cosmos. Eckl: “There is a lot of evidence to suggest that there will be a new structure. We will see in two or three years whether it matches and is successful.”
Eberl’s most important task will be to find a trainer with whom we can work together on the announced “realignment”. Of the names being traded, Xabi Alonso (Bayer Leverkusen) would be the logical successor to Tuchel, according to Eckl. However, we hear from the Spaniard’s environment that he has a clear three-year plan in Leverkusen: “There he could now show that he can develop a team in the Champions League.”
It is also clear that Liverpool FC, among others, would be an interesting destination for Alonso. Even if we don’t know whether the 42-year-old would really be keen to follow in the big footsteps of Jürgen Klopp.
Defeat against Leipzig would change everything again
First, FC Bayern has to finish the season somehow. Crucial point: Another defeat on Saturday against RB Leipzig (Radio report and ticker from 6.30 p.m) would require another reaction, Eckl believes.
“If things go wrong, then the bosses have to react. Because then Lazio is at the door and then that’s what counts. A round of 16 exit in the Champions League – then they can close the shop.”
Will there be someone to look after the record champions until the end of the season? Difficult. Eckl is sure: “That’s why they’re trying to delay it as long as possible because they can’t find anyone who will do it until summer.”
