Real Madrid takes on Europe’s crown

Real Madrid won the Euroleague basketball title.

In the final in Kaunas, Lithuania, the Spaniards defeated Olympiacos Piraeus from Greece 79:78 (45:45) in a crime film and, after 2015 and 2018, won the title in the premier class for the third time. In addition, the club from the Spanish capital won eight times in the previous competition, the European Champion Clubs’ Cup.

In the game for third place, AS Monaco beat FC Barcelona 78:66. In a thrilling final, Olympiakos came into play better and were seven points ahead after the first quarter.

The Spaniards were better in the second round: it was 45:45 in the changing rooms. Piraeus repeatedly relied on the outstanding Bulgarian Sasha Vezenkov and was almost continuously in front until shortly before the end.

Real veteran Sergio Llull, who hadn’t hit a basket up to that point, made the lead 79:78 with 3.1 seconds to go. Olympiakos still had a chance to win but Kostas Sloukas’ attempt was unsuccessful.

Vezenkov was the best scorer with 29 points. Sergio Rodriguez was the most successful for Real with 15 points.
