Kylian Mbappé makes history and sets a record set by Cristiano Ronaldo. The Frenchman also helps Real to an important victory.

The struggling Spanish record champions Real Madrid moved within one point of league leaders FC Barcelona with a 2-0 home win against Sevilla FC. Kylian Mbappé scored the final score with a penalty kick (86th minute) and equaled Cristiano Ronaldo’s club record from 2013 with his 59th competitive goal of the calendar year.

After his goal, Mbappé first gestured with his fist before imitating Ronaldo’s “Siu celebration”. After the game, the 27-year-old shared a series of pictures on Instagram showing his celebration and a photo of him at a young age with Ronaldo. Under the post he wrote: “Believe in your dreams.” He also posted a crown emoji, a goat, which probably stands for “GOAT” (Greatest of all time), and tagged the Portuguese.

Jude Bellingham laid the foundation for success with the opening goal in the 38th minute. The former Dortmund player scored the 1-0 in front of his brother Jobe, who is under contract with BVB. In the 68th minute, Sevilla also weakened themselves when central defender Marcao was sent off with a yellow-red card. Real coach Xabi Alonso, who has recently been under massive pressure, gave himself some breathing room with the success.

However, Barcelona can extend their lead again on Sunday. Coach Hansi Flick’s team will play against Villarreal FC in the afternoon (from 4:15 p.m. in the live ticker on t-online). Real will play their next competitive game against Betis Sevilla on January 4th.
