Real Madrid and Manchester United confirm Casemiro transfer

Second most expensive over 30 transfer

This article first appeared at 7:15 am on August 19 and has been continuously updated with new information since then.

After the false start in the Premier League and 20th place, the rumor mill at Manchester United has literally boiled over in the past few days. Now, however, a transfer has been made concrete for the English record champions: Casemiro comes from Real Madrid. The Spaniards officially confirmed the transfer on Friday night, with United following shortly thereafter. Previously, English (“The Athletic” & “TheTelegraph“) and Spanish (including “mark” & “Onda Cero“) Media reports that the 30-year-old defensive midfielder has agreed with the “Red Devils” on a contract until 2026 with an option for another year. This should bring Casemiro an annual salary of around 20 million euros gross – almost twice as much as in Madrid.

The fee is said to be 70 million euros plus bonuses of another 12 million euros. This would make Casemiro (market value: 40 million euros) the second most expensive over-30 player in football history after Cristiano Ronaldo, who left Real for 117 million euros in 2018 for Juventus. “Real Madrid CF and Manchester United have agreed on the transfer of player Carlos Henrique Casemiro. Real Madrid would like to express their gratitude and affection to Casemiro.” in the official communication of the LaLiga club. Casemiro is “an exemplary player who gave everything for Real Madrid.”

Coach Carlo Ancelotti had already confirmed Casemiro’s change request at a press conference on Friday afternoon. “That’s a subject I discussed with him this morning. He wants to take on a new challenge. The club and I understand that. Because of his achievements for the club and what he is, we have to respect his wish. There are currently negotiations, nothing is official. He’s still a Real Madrid player but his will is to leave. If he leaves and an agreement is found, we have options to replace him,” said the Italian (quoted via “realtotal.de“).

In Madrid, the 63-time national player was under contract until 2025. His legitimate successor, Aurélien Tchouameni, has already been signed this summer, with €80m going to AS Monaco. At least in the first year, the Frenchman should have learned from Casemiro, who has won all the titles with Real, including the Champions League five times.

“The Athletic”: Manchester United fails with 80 million offer for Antony

Casemiro’s compatriot Antony from Ajax Amsterdam could have been even more expensive from Man United’s point of view. As “The Athletic” reported, the “Red Devils” offered around 80 million euros for the 22-year-old right winger. The Dutch champions refused, however, after Lisandro Martínez (24; United), Sébastien Haller (28; BVB), Noussair Mazraoui (24), Ryan Gravenberch (20; both FC Bayern) or Nicolás Tagliafico (29) did not want any other top performers lose format. From United’s point of view, a commitment from PSV professional Cody Gakpo (23) is more likely.
