Real loses Madrid duel at Atlético – Ancelotti takes the blame

Kroos among goal scorers

Previous leaders Real Madrid suffered their first defeat of the season in LaLiga and fell to third place in the table. Four days after the 1-0 win in the Champions League against 1. FC Union Berlin, the team around German professionals Antonio Rüdiger and Toni Kroos lost the city duel at Atlético Madrid 1:3 (1:2).

Double goalscorer Álvaro Morata (4th/46th) and Antoine Griezmann (18th) each sealed the “Royal’s” defeat with headers. Former world champion Kroos only managed to score 1-2 in the 35th minute. Real are now two points behind FC Barcelona and FC Girona, who are tied on points. For Los Blancos it was only their third league defeat at Atlético this millennium. The “Royals” last lost to their city rivals in 2022 and before that in 2015.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti took the blame after the final whistle: “It could be that I could have done better. If the team doesn’t do what it’s supposed to, then I’m responsible for it. But that’s not a problem, I have thick skin. But taking responsibility is the minimum.” The goals conceded were all the same. Atlético opened up the center and Real were not doing well at the back. “Usually in a moment like this, the left defender or a central defender moves forward to close the space and be more compact. But we weren’t compact today when we conceded three goals,” said the 64-year-old Italian.
