Previous manager goes to Bayern
Red Bull Salzburg has found a successor for Bayern Munich sports director Christoph Freund. As the “Red Bulls” announced, Bernhard Seonbuchner will take over the vacant post on September 1st. The 40-year-old signs until June 2026.
“Seonbuchner has held various positions at the academy and FC Liefering since 2010. After various trainer and coordinator jobs, combined with numerous championship titles, the trained industrial clerk and holder of the UEFA Trainer-Pro license took over the position of sports director for young people in 2017,” the Salzburg team described the new sports director on their website.

RBS Managing Director Stephan Reiter explained: “After careful consideration, we have come to the conclusion that we actually have the best successor solution for Christoph Freund almost in-house. Bernhard Seonbuchner, who has been in various positions at the Red Bull Academy and for our cooperation partner FC Liefering for 13 years now, knows our philosophy and our idea of football like no other.”
Freund has been sporting director in Salzburg since 2015, and as a look at the TM database shows, only two clubs worldwide have achieved a better transfer balance than the Austrian series champion during this period. At Salzburg there is an increase of almost 400 million euros, including the sale of Dominik Szoboszlai, Karim Adeyemi and Naby Keïta to the Bundesliga, which resulted in high income. Freund replaced Ralf Rangnick eight years ago, before that he was team manager from 2006 and sports coordinator from 2012. His RB contract would have been valid until 2026. A year ago he was also courted by Chelsea FC.
