RB Leipzig’s Eberl: “Also look to Gladbach” for transfers

RB’s new managing director Sport

Max Eberl has been Managing Director Sport at RB Leipzig since the beginning of December – after eight days in the new job, he has a press conference reported to speak. The ex-pro, who shaped the Borussia Mönchengladbach squad for over 13 years, said (quoted via “sports1“): “RB Leipzig has other options, we can use other sizes. I now have new opportunities. This club has unbelievable conditions that I dreamed of in Gladbach.”

Apparently he won’t take advantage of these opportunities until next summer, because “we want to go into the second half of the season with this squad. So we won’t add a player. Maybe there could be a small loan if a player wants more playing time.” The footballers from his former club are also an option for the 2023/24 season: “There is no agreement. But to be honest: I made good transfers there and will now make the best possible transfers here as well. I would also take a look at Gladbach to see what players could be interested in for Leipzig.” The Saxons have never signed from Gladbach, while Eberl transferred Hannes Wolf (23) to the “foals” for a total of 11 million euros.

RB professionals who are of interest to clubs that are above Leipzig in the football food chain include Christopher Nkunku (25), who is said to be in agreement with Chelsea, Dani Olmo (24), who is tied until 2024, and Konrad Laimer (25), whose contract ends next summer.

RB Leipzig’s Eberl: “An extension with Olmo would have a big signal effect”

Eberl says: “We were very happy with Koni Laimer, because I’ve even fought for him to come to Gladbach. Accordingly, I said to him: ‘Listen, Koni, if you don’t come to Gladbach, I’ll come to Leipzig. And then it would be stupid if you left after half a year.’ I know that the probability is very, very, very small (…). He hasn’t decided yet, but if there’s still one percent, I’ll fight for it.” FC Bayern is traded as Laimer’s next target – the Austrian would be the third important RB player to move to Munich since 2021. The record champions previously secured the services of Dayot Upamecano (24) and Marcel Sabitzer (28) and coach Julian Nagelsmann for around 77 million euros.

Eberl continues: “Dani Olmo is a similar story to Koni (…). He is an outstanding player and initial talks have already taken place. We will continue the talks. With all the players whose contracts would expire in 2024, I have to give the coach a lot of thought. But it is clear that an extension with Dani Olmo would have a great signal effect.” There is “extremely great interest in Nkunku, the most valuable Leipziger with a market value of 80 million euros, which is why there is also a threat of something there”.

The new Managing Director Sport had decided to start after an eleven-month break during the World Cup break in December “to have some peace and quiet to analyze everything”. He wants to get to know the environment and in the future “pay great attention to the youth academy because it is a very important part of the club and society”.

Players from Leipzig’s youthTo overview
The topic of homegrown talent has not been given enough attention to date with the rapid rise of the “Red Bulls”. No player from the 13-year-old club who comes from their own offspring has been able to establish themselves in Leipzig in recent years – storm talent Hugo Novoa (19) is preparing to break the trend this season.
