Match practice required
National player Timo Werner, who is in a sporting crisis, has received approval from his club RB Leipzig for a possible move in the winter transfer window. RB confirmed a corresponding contribution from “Bild” from the German Press Agency on Thursday. Accordingly, Werner could go on loan to another club in order to offer himself for the German national team’s European Championship squad with a lot of match practice. Sports director Rouven Schröder and coach Marco Rose explained what the Saxons’ hopes are for the 27-year-old.
“Timo is our player. We have great confidence in his abilities and extremely value him as a person. Our wish is that he prevails at RB Leipzig. Of course, we are also discussing further options with him,” said Schröder, who, like Rose, is in constant contact with Werner. The coach said in an interview with “Sky”: “In the end, it’s the performance principle that counts. Each player must accept this competition for operational periods. Now it’s about deciding: Do I accept my situation and fight? Or am I changing? Everyone has the chance to offer good services. When Timo trains, he is very hardworking. Nevertheless, his situation is not easy.”
Werner recently let it be known that he wanted to make his way at RB, but he doesn’t have much time because he wants to secure a place in the national team for the home European Championships in the summer. Since the start of the season, the Stuttgart native has only appeared sporadically because Leipzig’s attack includes newcomer Loïs Openda and Yussuf Poulsen and Benjamin Sesko have overtaken Leipzig’s record scorer. Werner is also often injured and is currently missing due to back problems.
Werner returned from Chelsea FC in the summer of 2022 for 20 million euros, to whom he moved in 2020. However, he was no longer able to build on his record from his first RB spell with 95 goals in 159 Bundesliga games.
