Club champions RB Leipzig are not really getting going at the start of the Virtual Bundesliga Club Championship season. After seven games, the defending champions are in seventh place.
Two defeats on Wednesday in the south-east relay of the VBL played a significant role in the Saxons’ current position in the table.
The fifth to seventh match days were played. Leipzig had to admit defeat both against 1. FC Heidenheim 1846 (3:3; 0:2; 2:4) and against FC Augsburg (0:3; 0:3).
These are bankruptcies that could give the VBL defending champions pause. The team around professional Umut “Umut” Gültekin has already suffered three bankruptcies this season. For comparison: In the entire league phase of the last 2022/23 season there were only four defeats.
While the champions are stumbling, the top team in the south-east is keeping its clean slate: 1. FSV Mainz 05 is at the top of the table with 21 points after wins against Hertha BSC, SC Freiburg and SV Darmstadt 98 – eleven points ahead of RB Leipzig.
