After Laimer’s failure
Despite the ongoing injury misery at RB Leipzig, new coach Marco Rose is not calling for an increase in the squad on the board level. “No, I don’t do it either, I don’t have to either, because of course I have to see how and where we stand, maybe we’ll get through quite well,” said Rose on Monday in Leipzig. During the international break, the 46-year-old only has five professionals available for training.

After Konrad Laimer had an operation on his foot and the Saxon Bundesliga club will even be absent until the end of the World Cup in December, Rose wants to examine and analyze the situation first. “It’s not like we don’t have enough players. But we have intensive weeks ahead of us and you never know what will happen. That is the core issue. I think we can do well with the size of the squad if we don’t have any more injuries.”
According to reports, his predecessor Domenico Tedesco deliberately wanted to keep the squad small in order to avoid discord if not every player got the playing time he might have expected. Leipzig has 25 professionals in the professional team, only FC Bayern has a smaller squad with 24 players. RB gave up a total of 22 players (incl. loans) in the summer, taking a total of 75.62 million euros from sales (overview).

In addition to Laimer, Lukas Klostermann and Dani Olmo are also injured. “Then things sometimes add up, then at the end of the day some players have to play more – we don’t really want that, that we chase the boys into things that then bring us follow-up problems,” said Rose, adding: “Me don’t open the debate either, the squad is too small. We’re narrow and we’ll see how we get through. That can also help us under certain circumstances.”
