RB Leipzig releases head coach Tedesco: Need “a new impetus”

After Donetsk bankruptcy

RB Leipzig releases head coach Domenico Tedesco with immediate effect. The measure is “the result of an in-depth analysis following the 4-1 home defeat in the UEFA Champions League against Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday evening,” the club said in a statement. The assistant coaches Andreas Hinkel and Max Urwantschky will also be relieved of their duties, and the Saxons want to inform about a successor “promptly”.

Club boss Oliver Mintzlaff explained the decision in a longer statement: “The decision to release Domenico Tedesco was very difficult for us. We played a very successful second half of the season with Domenico last season and qualified for the Champions League with an average of two. In addition, we won our first major title with the DFB Cup and thus played the most successful season in our young club history. We owe him and his coaching team a big thank you for that. Domenico is an excellent coach who will certainly continue to be successful. However, after the moderate start to the Bundesliga season with five points from five games, especially after the most recent games at Eintracht Frankfurt and at home against Donetsk, we lacked the conviction that an immediate turnaround could take place in the current constellation. We have overall responsibility for RB Leipzig and want to achieve our goals. Therefore, in the overall assessment, we came to the conclusion that we need a new impetus. We regret that we are now parting ways and would like to expressly thank Domenico Tedesco and his team for the work they have done. We wish Domenico all the best for his sporting and private future.”

Even before the Champions League game, “sports1“ Written that the paths could separate in a similar performance against the Ukrainians as in the 0: 4 in Frankfurt. “I don’t worry about my position. I’m very disappointed right now after the game, but tomorrow the world will look different again,” said the 36-year-old on Tuesday evening. Meanwhile, club boss Oliver Mintzlaff refrained from interviews.

Before the kick-off in the “premier class”, the managing director emphasized with a view to the defeat at Eintracht: “The coach can’t help it if there is no willingness to run at all and the willingness to fight is totally missing.” Criticism was in after the game Frankfurt not only given by Mintzlaff, but also by the coach himself. The appearance was “a novelty”. “We missed everything, but not in the previous games,” he said on Monday. After the Champions League opener, he drew parallels to the previous games: “It’s difficult to find the right words. The gameplay is insane. It reflects what we’ve seen over the past few weeks.” With only two wins, Leipzig started the season worse than last year under Jesse Marsch, who had to leave in December. Not counting the 8-0 win in the DFB Cup against the Hamburg regional league club Teutonia Ottensen, the “Red Bulls” are currently 10:18 goals. On Saturday (3:30 p.m.) the Saxons host second-placed Borussia Dortmund.

Recently, the “Bild” brought ex-BVB coach Marco Rose into play as a possible successor. Meanwhile, Tedesco is under contract with Leipzig until next year. For him there was the possibility of an extension, but he postponed the topic for the time being, as he made public in June. “We can talk in November or December, during the World Cup break,” he said at the time. Now it might not even come to that. Tedesco had coached Leipzig in 38 games to date, in which he averaged 1.87 points, which is his best haul in the men’s division. In May he celebrated winning the DFB Cup with the “Red Bulls” – the first ever in the club’s history.

Tedescos out at RB Leipzig: That’s how the TM community thinks

Within the TM community, users expected a change of coach at Leipzig. “Normally I would have said that you give Tedesco another chance and stay loyal to him. But with a Hütter and a rose on the market, I believe that it will be sacrificed for one of the two,” writes “Adlertraeger77”. “The boys are the same. They can…actually. But that’s not enough. In all areas. Now a cut is necessary. We don’t get the basics on the pitch. Mintzlaff has to react,” demanded RB fan “Maniac123”. “MzuM1893” meanwhile emphasized: “Tedesco runs a serious risk of becoming one of those burnt coaches who are not expected to take on new tasks in the future.”
