precaution
Newcomer Örjan Nyland (32) is about three weeks after signing at RB Leipzig before his debut. The goalkeeper, who was signed after Péter Gulácsi (32) ruptured his cruciate ligament, is expected to replace Janis Blaswich (31) who has a calf problem. Coach Marco Rose emphasized at a press conference before the duel with Bayer Leverkusen that this was only a precautionary measure. “It’s just for one game, we don’t want to risk any more,” Rose said of the crucial Champions League group stage game against Shakhtar Donetsk. Nyland is not eligible to compete in the “premier class”.
“Ny is a super, super relaxed, motivated boy with a certain amount of experience. He’s loud, coaches the guys in front of him well, catches balls, we have full confidence,” said Rose. Nyland has already played 18 Bundesliga games in his career when he was under contract with FC Ingolstadt between 2015 and 2018. The Norwegian clinched a win: on matchday 14 of the 2016/17 season against Leipzig. Nyland was available for the Red Bulls on a free transfer as he moved into the free market after his contract with Reading in England ended. The right-footer, who signed a contract until the end of the season, was unemployed for more than three months, but he gained match practice with the national team.
RB Leipzig: Halstenberg returns
Although Rose has to make a change between the posts, he can plan with Marcel Halstenberg (31) again. The full-back has cured his infection. Despite the 3-2 win against Real Madrid, Rose warned his team about the Rhinelanders, who would come “with a lot of courage and strength” after the 2-2 draw at Atlético Madrid. “We have to be careful, of course,” Rose said. Leverkusen is “not in an easy phase at the moment. And yet you can tell that they are improving things. You can see that they are developing under Xabi Alonso,” said the 46-year-old.
Meanwhile, Leipzig is still undefeated in home games. “We want to continue our trend in the five more games, we are an absolute home power, that’s how we want to appear,” said Rose. After the false start, there is still a need for points in the Bundesliga: “In this intensive phase, every result helps us. We know that we’re still a bit behind in the Bundesliga. We know what is at stake, where we stand and where we want to go.”
