Contract expires in 2024
Shortly before the turn of the year, Lukas Klostermann’s future beyond the season remains unclear. The expiring contract at RB Leipzig has still not been extended, and a farewell has not been communicated – although those responsible had been announcing an imminent decision for some time. However, the 27-year-old defender still seems to be playing poker.
From January 1st, Klostermann can officially negotiate with other clubs without consulting his current employer. The right foot seems to want to take advantage of this opportunity, because according to the “Kicker” he allowed the extension deadline set by RB to pass. Leipzig had presented the professional, who has been under contract since 2014, with an offer that was ready to be signed, but so far without success.

“We would like Lukas to extend his contract. He is important for us, a seasoned player, he has an incredible history in our club. I think we will soon have clarity on this, which is what we want. The cards have been laid,” sports director Rouven Schröder said recently, apparently relying on the deadline. Instead, there are now some indications of a departure for Klostermann, who with a market value of 8 million euros is the third most valuable Bundesliga professional with an expiring contract.
The “Kicker” considers it unlikely that Leipzig will adjust the numbers on offer upwards in view of potential interested parties. As the longest-serving professional after Yussuf Poulsen (29), the defensive all-rounder has a high status in the team, but was usually left behind in central defense compared to captain Willi Orbán (31), Mohamed Simakan (23) and Castello Lukeba (21).
