Orbán & Gvardiol meet
RB Leipzig has exacerbated the sporting crisis at VfL Wolfsburg. Coach Florian Kohfeldt’s team lost 2-0 (0-0) to the runners-up in the Bundesliga on Sunday and have now been waiting for a win for eleven competitive games. As tables-15. the Lower Saxony are only two points away from the relegation rank.
In front of 1,000 admitted spectators in the Red Bull Arena, Willi Orbán (76th) and Josko Gvardiol (84th) scored the goals for the hosts. Under their head coach Domenico Tedesco, the Saxons managed their third Bundesliga win in a row and are now sixth in the table and closer to the Champions League places. For Leipzig it was the 100th victory in the Bundesliga.
In the duel between the two best of the year at the DFB coaching course, Tedesco made three changes compared to the 2-0 win against Rostock in the DFB Cup. Among other things, he relied on youngster Hugo Novoa alongside striker André Silva. Kohfeldt brought on Steffen Aster Vranckx for Renato who was suspended. In the critical phase, he relies on “stability. Correcting every week cannot be the way,” he emphasized before the game on the TV station “DAZN”. You have to endure the dominant phases of RB, he demanded.

Like the guests after the death of Hans-Jürgen Dörner, Leipzig played in black ribbons and started the game with a lot of possession. But not much came out at first. Novoa (18′) had the first chance to score with a long-range shot that Koen Casteels parried. The Wolfsburg shielded their sixteen. Due to the high RB defense, VfL repeatedly had counterattack chances, but these were carelessly squandered.
The guests became bolder, got more time in the game and had the chance to take the lead with a free kick from Vranckx (38′). But Peter Gulacsi fended off the direct shot from 25 meters to the corner. Immediately afterwards, the Hungarian national keeper was there again and saved from close range – again against Vranckx. Kohfeldt liked the sudden increase in chances, who emotionally high-fived all players with the half-time whistle.
After the change, the footballing lean but hard-fought game was completely open. Both teams made too many mistakes in the build-up game. Tedesco set new accents in the 55th minute with Lukas Klostermann, Dani Olmo and Tyler Adams. That had an effect.
Orbán (58th) chased the ball into the net from close range, but it was offside. After a good hour, RB pushed and increased the pressure. After a header from Silva against the post, Orban also headed the ball over the line from one and a half meters – and the goal counted before Gvardiol added – confirmed by the video evidence.
