One of the biggest transfers of the summer so far is through. Dominik Szoboszlai is leaving RB Leipzig after two and a half years and moving to Liverpool, the English club confirmed on Sunday. The work permit for the Hungarian in the UK is still pending.
The Reds are making use of a €70m release clause, which puts the 22-year-old behind Jude Bellingham as the most expensive signing of the new season. Szoboszlai also rises to Leipzig’s top sale and dethrones Christopher Nkunku, who recently switched to Chelsea, and Naby Keïta. Both left the “Red Bulls” for €60m each.
Liverpool, on the other hand, has only paid twice more for access in the club’s history. Reportedly earlier this week it looked like the deal would be difficult to complete as time seemed tight as Szoboszlai’s clause expired on June 30th. On the deadline, however, Liverpool informed Leipzig in good time after an agreement had been reached with the offensive player.

“The last three or four days have been really long; it wasn’t that easy. But in the end I’m here, I’m happy and can’t wait to get started,” Szoboszlai commented on his new club’s last-minute deal. “[Ein] really historical club, really good players, good coach, everything is good. It’s perfect for me to take the next step in a club like this. The fans, the stadium, everything is really good,” enthused Szoboszlai.
“Of course we would have liked to have gone into the new season and the years to come with Dominik,” said Leipzig’s sporting director Max Eberl. The fact that Szoboszlai is moving to a top club was recorded by the official as an “award for us as a club and for the work that is done here to take young players to the next level.”
