Olympic ski jumping champion Andreas Wellinger suffered a setback at the World Cup in Trondheim and delivered his worst competition in almost a year.
At the end of the second stop of the Raw Air tour in Norway, the 28-year-old only came 28th in a quadruple victory for Austria led by Stefan Kraft.
“I just didn’t adjust well to the hill. That was already the case yesterday, but I still managed to get into the competition,” said Wellinger, who took fourth place in jumping on the normal hill on Tuesday, on “ZDF “.
This time he wasted all his chances in the first round and in 30th place he only narrowly made it into the final.
Raimund falls in the second round
As the best German in the premiere competition on the newly built large Granasen ski jump, Pius Paschke did not get past tenth place.
Philipp Raimund, who was in sixth place at halftime, fell back to twelfth place due to a fall in the second round, but at least remained uninjured.
Things went up for Karl Geiger, who came 16th in the second round after a day’s best score of 140.0. The five-time world champion had previously missed the second round four times in a row.
“The jump is more good than many podium places and many wins,” said Geiger: “I once again got into weightless gliding, sailing along.”
Kraft confidently leads the raw air rankings
Kraft won his twelfth win of the season and 42nd career success with jumps of 137.5 and 134.0 m (291.8 points) ahead of Daniel Tschofenig (290.8) and Jan Hörl (288.8).
In the Raw Air ranking, the winner of which collects 60,000 euros, Kraft leads just as confidently as he does in the overall World Cup. Despite his weak competition, Wellinger’s third place in the World Cup can hardly be taken away.
The Raw Air tour will conclude on Friday with ski flying on the Monsterbakken in Vikersund.
